Equipment That is Needed to Start Crossfit
After going back and forth with indecision, you have decided to try out Crossfit. Are you wondering what you need? Other than a big dose of courage?
Honestly, to start Crossfit you aren’t going to need a lot. Your affiliate is going to have all the things you absolutely need. Even if you wander in with street clothes on, they will find something for you to do. They are always ready to help a newbie fall in love with the sport.
There are, however, a few things that can help you when you are starting – even as a beginner.
Workout Clothes
Obviously, you will need some workout clothes. Starting out, you can just throw on whatever will be comfy for working out in. You will find what clothes are comfortable for you and even more specifically what you prefer to wear for certain types of movements.
Reebok has a nice tank for women that are longer. I love that it covers my midsection. I don’t particularly like short tops or crop tops. Reebok also has some nice workout shorts that have a longer inseam than a lot of shorts.
Sports Bras. I could write a whole blog post on sports bras alone, and in fact – I may in the future. Bras are important if you are larger than a B cup. We run, jump rope, and jump on boxes, among other things. This is high impact stuff. Get a good bra that’s supportive!!

CrossFit Shoes
Before you invest in anything else other than workout clothes, I’d recommend specific CrossFit shoes.
Those tennis shoes you see with the big bulky cushion on the heel will make it very hard for barbell work. It tends to shove you forward when you want to place weight in your heels. They are also versatile and are designed for the variety of movements we do in a wod. Shoes specifically designed for CrossFit often have a special tread on the side so you can get some grip if you are climbing a rope. Overall, the specifically designed CrossFit shoe is designed with the CrossFit athlete in mind.
A Speed Jump Rope
If you have any desires to actually succeed at double unders, you need a rope. A good rope, and not just what cheapies your box may have available. Good speed ropes tend to be very personal. I personally like a thicker, heavier rope. I think these are good for beginners because if it’s heavier you can get a better feel for the timing and how the rope moves. Again, it’s all personal opinion. Try out ropes from your box community before you purchase and see what ropes they have that you might prefer. This is a good, affordable rope from Rogue Fitness.
A Good Protein
Ok, the last one isn’t really a must-have, but I highly recommend it. Protein. Yes, you need a protein powder to mix after you workout. You will not be as sore if you do this!!! I use Swolverine. I’m aware it’s expensive, and I’ve just started using it 2 years into my CrossFit journey. However, you can get any good whey isolate you want or can afford. My biggest tip is to use a vanilla protein powder. This way you can make it any flavor you want. You can add a touch of chocolate sugar-free syrup, milk, water, almond milk, and my personal favorite – adding it to orange Gatorade for the creamsicle flavor.
That’s really all you need starting out. The main thing is to not get hung up on your needs, just get yourself into that box for about 3 months. You’ll be so addicted to CrossFit you’ll end up with more than enough gear!!
