How to Roll Out Cookie Dough Evenly

Learn my tip on how to roll out cookie dough evenly for uniform sugar cookies!

I discovered the joy of cookie making two years ago. I have been a baker for years, and love baking, but never gotten into the world of rolled cookies. The reason I never did is that I actually don’t like sugar cookies (I know – I’m weird!).  That is until I discovered a recipe for a chocolate sugar cookie!

Once I discovered it, I just had to make and decorate cookies! I started by taking a local cookie making class.  However, in those classes, they tend to have the cookie already made for you.  Once I got home, I struggled with getting the dough rolled out evenly.  I couldn’t get the dough rolled out to a uniform thickness, so that means it doesn’t bake evenly. It also means I’d get torn to shreds on the cookie baking challenge (yes, I have a pipe dream that I could totally be on that show).

I found a simple kitchen tool that solved that for me!

How to Roll Out An Even Cookie Dough

It’s an adjustable rolling pin evenly flattens the dough to ensure uniform baking! I personally love my Joseph Joseph rolling pin.  It has 1/16, 1/6, 1/4, and 3/8-inch removable discs make it simple to roll to the desired thickness.  Its made of solid beech wood, the plastic rings are etched with measurements and has plastic screws hold rings in place.

I tend to roll out my cookie dough to ¼ inch thick.  It’s the perfect thickness for me.  It’s not so thin it breaks, but I also don’t care for thick cookies.  You can play with your cookie dough thickness, and find the one that is perfect for you!

Another Tip for Rolling Out Cookie Dough

Other than my special rolling pin to get the cookie dough to a uniform exact thickness, I have a few other tips and tricks for rolling out the perfect cookie dough!

I never use flour to roll out the dough.  Flour adds to the dough and can make the cookie drier than I want.  Flour also prevents me from rerolling the dough more than once or twice because each time you have to add more and more flour.

Instead of flour, I place the dough between parchment or wax paper and roll it sandwiched between those papers.  Then, my rolling pin doesn’t stick and I don’t have to add flour to the cookie dough I worked so hard on.

The other benefit of using the parchment paper is that I don’t have difficulty washing my rolling pin!!  There is no sticky dough to try and get off my pin!

I hope this helps you with getting uniform sugar cookies!  Don’t be afraid to jump into cookie making.  If you don’t have any local classes, I highly recommend a cookie making class from Bluprint!
