I hate buying buttermilk for cooking. It never fails we pour the rest out, and it’s like watching money getting poured down the drain!!!!
Also, more than not, when I decide to bake, it’s unplanned, so buttermilk isn’t typically in my refrigerator.
So why not make a substitute with what you have on hand? What if I told you that you can make your own buttermilk substitute?
Save money not buying buttermilk!
And just make your own! How? (Ok, ok, I know it isn’t exactly buttermilk, but it’s a perfect substitute and your pancakes won’t know any difference!)
How to Make a Buttermilk Substitute
Basically, you are going to add acid to some dairy.
You are going to take a cup of milk (it doesn’t matter if it’s whole or 2%) and stir in a tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar. Let it stand for 10 minutes.
It won’t get as thick as buttermilk, but it’s going to do the job. Just use it as you would the buttermilk after the 10 minutes. You might see some curdled bits, but it’s fine – it will not hurt your finished product.
