As my son is approaching 5th grade, his love for reading is still going strong. He is an avid reader so I thought I’d ask him what books he thinks would be good books for 10-year-old boys and other 5th graders. I wanted to list things that genuinely are interesting to boys this age, and not just books listed as age appropriate or promoted by an adult. He went to his bookshelf to start brainstorming, and it took off from there!
Since he has been in elementary school, he loves book series. He loves books that build upon each other. His elemenatary school librarian used to even laugh that he would NOT read a book series out of order at all. He’d stop all together if the next book wasn’t available.
So, after much thought and changing of his mind, here is my son’s list of 11 great book series for 10-year-old boys! And of course, it includes a lot of book series!
Great Books for 10-Year-Old Boys
1) Harry Potter
Who doesn’t love a good Harry Potter book? These books, written by J.K. Rowling, are sure to capture the imagination of your favorite little wizard! I don’t think I need to convince many people that these books are amazing.
2) A Series of Unfortunate Events
Start with The Bad Beginning to see if it fits with your child’s interests!
However, my son warns you – it’s going to leave them wanting to start the next book immediately!
He also says he highly recommends having a dictonary around because there are a lot of large words that it introduces you to. He loves learning the new words as he reads along!
3) Diary of a Wimpy Kid
This is a hilarious series that is full of perfect little boy humor. My son says that he likes it because he says it includes things that really could happen! He has reread this series over and over.
Start with the first book if you aren’t ready to invest in the entire series!
4) Percy Jackson and the Olympians
This is by the best selling author, Rick Riordan. My son says that all the Rick Riordan books are great. This particular series has the main character Percy Jackson and his friend Annabelle who he says “you can’t help but root for”! It focuses in on Greek mythology as well.
You can start with the first book, The Lightning Thief.
5) Wonder
While my son likes the movie, he says he prefers the book! It’s a beautiful book about kindness, and something everyone should read.
6) The 13th Reality
This series follows a boy nicknamed Tick as he tries to save the universe, including alternate realities. It’s a fun journey through time and space!
7) Gregor the Overlander
These are written by Suzanne Collins, who authored the Hunger Games. These are a bit more age appropriate and take you in a fantasy land of oversized cockroaches in a world called the Underland! He lands here after his sister falls into a laundry grate and he follows.
8) The Kane Chronicles
The Kane Chronicles is a trilogy. Again, another series by RIck Riordan! The first book in this series is The Red Pyramid. My son says this one goes into some Egyptian mythology which he thinks is pretty cool!
9) How to be a Supervillian
This is a James Patterson book, and apparently one worth reading over and over according to my son! This is about a boy born to supervillians, and he too is supposed to grow up to be one. Only one problem – he is a very good boy!
He also insists that I mention it’s a Jimmy book and he says all those are kid approved. I had never heard of this so I went searching and it is a group of books approved by James Patterson and his editorial team. It appears all the proceeds from Jimmy books go into pro-reading resources, teacher scholarships, and libraries. So, even better!
I hope this list of nine exciting books and series for boys can keep your kid reading all through the summer even while school is out of session! Keeping them reading and intrested will help prevent the summer slide!
