Do you keep them once you make them?
Historically, I’m pretty bad at keeping any resolutions. I’m a creature of habit, and my habits can be hard to break. However, along the years, I’ve found that the resolutions I seem to keep are those that truly enhance my life.
Here are some New Years’ resolutions ideas for 2020 that you’ll want to keep! Also, a few tips on how to achieve these goals in 2020!
New Years Resolutions You Will Want to Keep in 2020
-
Less social media.
Yes, I’m a blogger who relies on social media. And I’m telling you to use it less. I want to use it less. I find myself scrolling needlessly, wasting precious time.
So this year – set limits. Once you’ve hit the allotted time you planned to spend on social media, put it away. Turn off your Instagram notifications and your FB messenger and be done.
My iPhone actually has a way of tracking your weekly usage, and that is a good way to gauge your progress as well. I think you’ll find that if you start achieving this resolution, the other resolutions may follow.
-
Learn a new skill.
It’s the year to do what you’ve always wanted. Wanted to learn to knit? Do it. Wanted to learn how to juggle? Why not?
Whatever it is that you have always wanted to learn, it’s time. Nothing like the present. There is no better way to learn a new skill than to just go for it – jump in headfirst. (You wanna know a secret? I turned 40 not knowing how to swim. I chose to make it the year I learned, and I did!)
- Lose or maintain a healthy weight.
Yes, this is a common resolution. We see the gyms packed to the brim in January and then as the month goes on, it thins out again. It’s hard to maintain a diet. It seems great for the first 3 lunches of lean chicken and broccoli, but then, life happens.
I lost 30 pounds and kept it off about 3 years ago. The secret sauce? I simply made very slow lifestyle changes. When you make slow changes, they become permanent.
Come Jan 1st, don’t go crazy with diet restriction, hardcore exercise, or extreme anything. Implement a change once a week. Maybe start with just getting to the gym 3 times a week. Once you’ve accomplished that several weeks, add something else like cutting out all sugary drinks. Let your body figure it out slowly and don’t push it to the limits in one week. -
Focus on loving yourself.
This. is. so. hard. for. so. many. Sometimes, it’s hard for me too. We are our own worst critics. Start with forgiving yourself when you make mistakes. Treat yourself. Take care of yourself! If you aren’t taking care of yourself, its hard to take care of anyone else.
-
Engage with your family more.
I think if you cut back on the social media, and learn to love yourself and take time for yourself, this may fall into place a bit more easily. Truly engage. Make a point to eat dinner with each other around the table at least once or twice a week, if not more. Talk. Ask questions that require thought, rather than just yes or no questions. Be in the moment.
-
Read more!
Aim to read more. Put away your electronics, get an old fashioned hardbound book and start reading. It will let your mind relax and go to another place. Read with your children to engage more with them!
-
Get more fresh air.
Another great time to set down the electronics, spend time with your family and get some exercise. You can accomplish so many goals at once!
-
Save more money.
Quit buying useless things. Plan for what you buy, don’t buy mindlessly.
-
Get organized.
This is a hard one! It takes a lot of practice. I’m still not great at this. I usually work on my planner and the week ahead on the weekend, including meal plans. Sometimes, I fall off track, but the key here is that if you miss a few weeks, don’t get frustrated. Just get started again.
What is your New Year’s Resolution? How do you plan to implement and keep your resolution? I’d love to hear!
