I know we have talked about keeping the kitchen clean throughout the week, but it’s spring cleaning time!!  When you spring clean, it’s time to get into the down and dirty and use some elbow grease!

Kitchen Spring Cleaning 101

Before you get started, you are going to gather all your supplies. (I also work better when I work to some music!  So get your favorite music playing!)

Kitchen Spring Cleaning Supplies

  • Cleaning Supply Caddy
  • All-Purpose Cleaner
  • Glass Cleaner
  • Oven Cleaner (if you don’t have a self-cleaning option)
  • Stainless Steel Cleaner
  • Wood Polish
  • Degreasing Spray
  • Microfiber cleaning cloths
  • Long handle duster
  • Broom
  • Mop (I highly suggest the Shark Steam Pocket Mop Hard Floor Cleaner!)
  • Trash bags/can
  • Step stool or ladder

Do The Basic Kitchen Cleaning and Clutter Pickup

Sadly, you need to pre-clean to get to the actual deep cleaning!  This means get your basic cleaning done before deep cleaning your kitchen.

  • Clean clutter off the kitchen countertops.
  • Take any small kitchen appliances off the countertops as well.
  • Empty your dishwasher.
  • Empty your sink.
  • Take all the magnets and papers hung on your refrigerator down so you can clean it properly.
  • Take out your current trash.

Get your kitchen free from obstacles that will hinder your deep cleaning!  You want as many surfaces exposed as possible so you can get to them without a struggle!

If anything is in the kitchen that doesn’t belong there, take it to it’s “proper home” in the house and get it out of the kitchen!  Do it before you start.

Empty kitchen counter and sink.

Now, I’m going to focus on cleaning the kitchen surfaces.  However, if you are feeling very ambitious, you can also clean out your kitchen cabinets/pantry.  You can see my guide to doing that here!

Time to Deep Clean the Kitchen

Once you’ve gotten the basic kitchen cleaning done, you can start that deep spring clean of your kitchen!  It’s the moment you’ve been waiting for!!  (Yes, I’m a sick soul who absolutely LOVES to deep clean things.)

Start from the top and work your way down when cleaning.

When you clean, you want to start from the top and go down.  As you clean and knockdown dust or debris, it will fall down, so you don’t want it to fall onto a floor you have just cleaned!!  Don’t work against yourself!

  • Dust the ceiling fan.  This is always where I start with dusting because it collects the most dirt and debris, not only in the kitchen but in every room of our house.
  • Dust the walls.
  • Dust your cabinets.

Clean Your Fan

Once you’ve dusted all the surfaces, clean the fan blades.  The dust is gone, but the grime and grease are not.  I use an all-purpose cleaner and wipe those blades down!

Deep Clean the Kitchen Cabinets, Countertops, and the Sink

  • Clean your cabinets now they have been dusted.  Wipe them down with a microfiber cloth and cleaner.  If you come across anything stubborn, a Mr. Clean Eraser can be your best friend!
  • Wipe down your countertop surfaces.
  • Clean any backsplashes or tile.
  • Make your sink sparkle.  My secret weapon with my sink is Bar Keepers Friend.  It will work on sinks, cookware, stove cooktops and exteriors, countertops (non-stone), and backsplashes.

Focus on the Appliances

  • Clean your microwave.  Inside and out!  You can heat a bowl of water with a splash of vinegar until it’s boiling to help loosen up any hardened material.  The steam from the water will help loosen some of the stuck-on foods.  Remove the turntable and wipe it down thoroughly.
  • Wipe down your refrigerator.  Focus on disinfecting those handles, which are high traffic areas. (That Magic Eraser can come in handy here too.) Don’t forget to clean off the top of the refrigerator!!  If it’s stainless steel, you may want to use a cleaner just for that. Once you wipe it down, you can return any magnets or children’s artwork that you want to continue to display.
  • Clean and polish the dishwasher.  Same as mentioned earlier, if it’s stainless steel you may want to use a cleaner especially for that.
  • Clean the oven, inside and out.  Run your self-cleaning cycle on your oven if you have it (but make sure your oven is completely empty when you do this!!).  If you do not have a self-cleaning cycle, use a cleaner specifically for your oven.
  • Clean and polish your stovetop.  You may need to use a degreaser to get that grime and grease off!  Don’t forget to tackle the range hood as well because grease manages to pop everywhere.
  • Lastly, clean and polish your small appliances, and place those back from any countertop spaces you removed them from.  You may want to refer to your manuals if you have a question on cleaning your small appliances.

Clean any Kitchen Furniture

Clean any of your kitchen furniture.  Wipe down tabletops and use nice wood polish for any wooden chairs or furniture.

Finish by Cleaning the Kitchen Floor

  • Sweep your floor first.  Get all the dirt and grime swept up.
  • Mop your floor after you sweep.  Move any furniture in the way, such as chairs.

Sit back, enjoy the clean and sparkle of your like-new kitchen!  There is something so satisfying about a clean sparkly kitchen!

Ready to tackle another room?  Try tackling your kids’ room and declutter all those old toys and books!
